This is a Family Business
In early 2014, David (Dad) began delving into his grandfather's memoirs—which were at the time nothing more than 100 pages of text from the typewriter of Prince Alexis Obolensky.
These memoirs recounted his family's escape from imperialist Russia during the March Revolution of 1917. Despite their privileged background, they faced considerable hardships and a complete upheaval of their lives. They went from living in lavish palaces in a country they had called home for over 1,000 years to being refugees with nothing but dirt floors, in a new land, scraping out a living in whatever way they could manage.
So, as a family and with considerable archival work from Dasha Morgan (David’s sister) we converted the pages of Alexis' memoir into digital text and then incorporated hundreds of photographs, newspaper articles, and other visual assets. This compilation eventually became a 300-plus-page coffee table book, a complete narrative for our children and grandchildren to reflect upon, be entertained by, and learn from. See for yourself.
This memoir vividly describes their experiences, as well as their survival techniques and his personal ethos. It even includes anecdotes about encounters with Rasputin at various state events and parties leading up to the revolution, as well as his perspectives on the government and society surrounding the revolution.
Growing up, Lexi and I (Oby) were regularly regaled with tales of our family history—personal experiences of love, travel, good times and bad. We learned of professional failures and successes, of trials, adventures, and journeys taken. We found—and still find—education, wisdom, and truth in the experiences and stories of our family members and friends.
We then began working on similar projects for family and friends. We started documenting their memoirs and autobiographies, not just as a favor but because we recognized the profound value and benefits of understanding one’s ancestors and the specific time and place in which we exist.
Recognizing that our existence is inextricably linked to those who came before us, we strive to learn valuable lessons during our limited time on Earth. By exploring our personal history, we gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and confidently navigate our place in the world.
If this resonates with you, we welcome you to engage us in a conversation.
